David called, of course.

“Don’t you know,” he asked, “that he’s just using you physically?”

“Of course he is.” Archie was just more honest about it. Boys always noticed Judy for her figure. It wasn’t her personality that made them ask for her phone number; until quite recently, Judy hadn’t had much of a personality at all.

“Doesn’t it bother you at all, him using you like that?”

Judy giggled. “Maybe I’m using him physically.”

“You’re not making him take off his clothes in public.”

“You already saw what Archie’s got, remember?”

“This isn’t funny.”

“Yes it is, David. But please don’t ever call me again.”

Archie arrived just then, dressed in his Sunday best, to ask if he might borrow Judy for an afternoon drive in the country. The point-by-point moving plan had designated this Sunday for cleaning and packing the heirloom china, but Judy’s mother was so charmed by Archie that she shooed Judy out the door.

Judy smiled – it was all so funny, David – and put a demure hand on Archie’s arm as he escorted her to his car. Judy didn’t bother asking where they were going. She rolled the window down and leaned her head on the edge, as she hadn’t done since she was a child, and felt the wind blow in her hair. It smelled of cut grass and pollen, summer sweetness and dirt. It made her smile.

It was a beautiful day for a drive, and she was almost sorry when Archie stopped the car. He spread out the picnic blanket and brought out what appeared to be an actual picnic.

Judy laughed, and Archie smiled. She knelt in the middle, kissing him luxuriously.

“You’re handsome in sunlight, too,” she told him.

He fed her a grape, but he didn’t bother to make her strip for him. They just undressed and made love in the summer sun. Afterward, he dressed again but she sunbathed nude while he fed her morsels.

Judy caught his hand and kissed his palm. The real Archie smiled back at her. He rose gracefully to his feet and fetched something from the car. When he returned, he handed her a magazine as he assembled bits of a camera together.

It was a Playboy, which she had heard about but never actually seen, and she flipped through its pages carefully.

“Do boys really look at this?” she asked.

“Religiously,” Archie replied.

The girls in the magazine were very pretty and very naked, posed in the kitchen or classroom as if their clothes had simply disappeared with a snap. They looked at the camera with an expression of delighted surprise, and Judy thought it was all kind of funny.

And arousing. It was funny and arousing. She’d seen other girls when they changed at school, and that had never been arousing at all, but the Playboy girls were different. They posed in a way that fairly shouted out their availability, and something about that was exciting.

Archie had finished putting together the camera and pointed it at her. “Smile,” he said, and she did. He had her pose with the magazine, reading it on her elbows as if she were reading a fashion magazine in her own bedroom.
